Fish Oil Supplements Can Improve Eye Health

Dry eye syndrome (DES) is a common condition that affects many Americans. Researchers at the Division of Preventive Medicine, Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston set out to determine if the consumption of the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil could alleviate dry eye syndrome.

In their Women’s Health Study3, they examined 39,876 female health professionals aged 45 to 84 who expressed DES as a health complaint. At the conclusion of the study, it was determined that a higher dietary intake of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids is associated with a decreased incidence of DES in women.

Studies have also shown that the omega-3 fatty acid DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) supports the health of the retina. This essential fatty acid is naturally found throughout the human body and is most abundant in the brain, eyes and heart. Docosahexaenoic acid ensures that the cells in these organs and other parts of the nervous system develop and function properly.

According to the American Optometric Association (AOA)4, studies in pre-term and full-term infants have shown that regular consumption of omega-3 fatty acids may be essential for optimal visual development. The AOA points out that various studies have determined being deprived of DHA results in visual impairment and retinal degradation in laboratory animals.

Dry eye syndrome also has been linked to omega-3 deficiency, researchers say. Additionally, low levels of DHA and EPA have also been associated with eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.


As we grow older, we may experience age-related vision loss. But American and Australian researchers have discovered that consuming fish oil supplements may help preserve our vision as we get up in years.5

Dr. Johanna Seddon of the Harvard Medical School-affiliated Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary led a study which shows that age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition that causes vision loss, is nearly twice as common in elderly smokers as in non-smokers. Those seniors who consume fish at least twice weekly are almost half as likely to have AMD than those who eat fish less than once a week, according to the study. Experts at the University of Sydney in Australia corroborated this study. They found that AMD problems are less common in people whose diets are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish, including salmon and mackerel.
