According to a study performed by the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Josai University in Japan, lab mice were studied to determine if fish oil is effective in fighting obesity.

Researchers were particularly interested in knowing if the essential fatty acids DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) contained in fish oil had an anti-obesity effect. The mice were fed EPA-rich or DHA-rich fish oil or given a placebo of safflower oil combined with lard.

At the conclusion of the eight-week study3, the scientists had some amazing findings to report. The final body weight of the groups fed EPA- and DHA-rich fish oil was significantly lower than that of the group fed safflower oil and lard. It was also determined that the fish oil treatments greatly decreased plasma insulin levels.

Medical professionals say that high levels of plasma in the human body is a physiological condition associated with coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

According to a study conducted by the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, overweight volunteers with high blood pressure, high cholesterol or high triglyceride levels were assigned the following four treatments: fish oil supplements from tuna, fish oil and exercise, sunflower oil or sunflower oil and exercise. At the end of the 12-week study, the group taking the tuna fish oil supplement experienced a drop in their elevated triglyceride levels and an increase in their high-density lipoproteins, or the “good” cholesterol.

Their research team conducted a study, in collaboration with the Center for Alaska Native Health Research at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, on 330 Yup’ik Eskimos in Alaska, who on average consume 20 times more omega-3 fats from fish than people in the lower 48 states.

Although the Eskimos have the same prevalence of obesity as the rest of the American population, the study concluded that a high intake of omega-3 fatty acids helps prevent obesity-related chronic diseases.

Researchers also discovered that participants with low blood levels of DHA and EPA demonstrated great increases in both blood triglycerides and C-reactive protein, which measures overall body inflammation.6 For people on the go who don’t have time to prepare or consume the large amounts of fatty fish that the Yup’ik Eskimos eat on a regular basis, fish oil supplements are a great way to ensure your dietary intake of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.
